The boys varsity basketball team has started off this season very well. The season is half way done and they are getting closer to district time. Every practice and every game the team is trying to get ready for district time. I got the chance to interview Coach Hammond and this is what he had to say.
Q: What is your team doing this week to prepare for your next game against Hillsboro?
A: Hillsboro is a very good team (ranked 5th in state) who is playing very well right now. With that said, they are a very systematic ball team. They are going to run the same offense/defense night in/ night out. We know exactly what they are going to do and we will have to execute our game plan, take care of the ball, and get back on defense to compete with them. This weeks practice will be more focused on us getting better as a team then focusing on what HIllsboro is going to do.
Q: How do you think your team overall is doing this season?
A: And what are some of the things they need to improve on before districts? I am happy thus far with our season. Currently we are sitting at 11-11. Our of those 11 losses, most of them our within 10 pts. There has only been 2 games where I didn’t feel like we had a chance to win going into the 4th quarter.
For districts, we will need to work on basic fundamentals and work on how to finish a game once we get that 8-10pt lead. We still make silly mistakes and careless turnovers that gives teams those extra possessions.
Our district is pretty tough holistically. For us to have a chance to win districts, we are going to have to play some of our best basketball of the year.
