Dragons News · DHS Has Big Weekend Against Rival Festus

The Dragons are no strangers to competition when it comes to our neighboring school Festus, but this past weekend the Dragons put the smackdown on the Tigers.

On Thursday night the D-Block went crazy as the volleyball team beat the Tigers in two sets. Head Volleyball Coach Mrs. Brinkman reflected, “We gave a true team effort against Festus. Defense and Offense were clicking together, serve-receive was on point, and we were hustling on every gameplay. You could tell our heart was in the game and we wanted that win more than they did.”

Junior Taylor Jones led in receptions with 17, adding 4 digs, 4 kills, and 3 blocks. Taylor felt the vibe of the game came from teamwork and the fans, noting, “Being able to work together as a team, along with the energy and cheering from the D-Block, helped us pull through with the win.”

The Dragons also had a win under Festus’s Friday night lights. Fans stormed the field as the Dragon football team beat the Tigers for the first time in 19 years with a final score of 38-20 in a hard-fought game. Tears were shed from most senior football players as they had waited 4 years for this moment. Head Coach Johnson concluded, “It’s taken four years of hard work to finally be able to beat a team that we thought was unbeatable.”

Seniors Garrett Hardin and Chase Greenlee and junior Dominic Punjani had an outstanding game on both offense and defensive. Chase put it perfectly: “The streak has ended. It’s our year,” while an elated Coach Genge declared, ” It was a great team win and a great win for this community that they deserve.” Garrett Hardin added, “It feels nice for our hard work to pay off and get a win against Festus.” Dominic Punjani echoed this sentiment, “It felt good to beat Festus and show our community what we can do.”  We are extremely proud of all our sports teams and cannot wait to see what else they accomplish this year.
